Emily Wilson received a BFA degree with a focus in painting from the Memphis
College of Art, Memphis, TN. During her time there she developed an interest in
wood and metal media. She did additional independent study in the Wood
Department at the Appalachian Center for Crafts in Smithville, TN.
Combining media and painting, Emily began exhibiting her sculptural works in
1985. Her earlier sculptural style was influenced by wooden Mexican folk art
which she discovered in New Orleans, and her love of "Outsider" work.
She is currently focused on more nature oriented works.
"Colorful birds, fish, leaves, and flowers, are among the many carved basswood
forms found in my creations," says the artist. "Lyrical armatures of welded steel rod
serve throughout as both line drawings and to support and connect all of the forms.
By combining the techniques of painting, wood art, carving and metal fabrication,
I create works that are wall sculptures as well as painted color compositions.
Through the color, forms and visual movement in each of my sculptures, I strive to
present the viewer with a natural ambience of tranquility and optimism."
Emily's sculptures hang in numerous corporate, museum, public, and private
collections.
