Nelson Holbrook White, was born in New London, CT, in 1932. He received
his earliest art instruction from his father, Nelson Cooke White; and grandfather,
Henry Cooke White, both well known Connecticut artists . After graduating from
Tabor Academy in MA, Nelson enrolled at Mitchell College in CT, but left to pursue
musical studies, concentrating on the violin. At the same time he began to spend
more time painting with his father and grandfather. In 1955 Nelson decided to
devote himself to a career as an artist and traveled to Florence, Italy, to become an
apprentice to Pietro Annigoni. He also studied with Nerina Simi.
Nelson's paintings reveal his love for nature and the outdoors. His highly
personalized technique combines rich color with deft brushwork. His paintings
interpret the landscape in an intimate yet dramatic fashion. Nelson divides his time
between his home in CT and Florence. His paintings are in corporate, museum and
private collections both in the U.S. and Europe.
