Mary Louise is nationally known for her paintings of "water and its reflections" -
whether it be the reflections of a picturesque Spanish rowboat or a Florida wading
bird depicted on the canvas - water is her theme. A skilled photographer, the artist
works from her own photographs of boats, birds and other wildlife.
"I concentrate on character and texture in my boat paintings", says Mary Louise.
"I love to convey the feeling of the wood grain and the early light catching the edges
of peeling paint. Spare me slick varnish, shiny new white paint, and above all the
amorphous fiberglass. Boats should have ribs like birds have feathers and joints. Let
me add that as beautiful as this is itself, it becomes more beautiful when reflected in
water - as does everything."
Mary Louise won the "Trompe l'Oeil Prize" while studying at the Museum of Fine
Arts, Boston. She graduated from Vassar College and also studied at the
Bellas Artes, Madrid, Spain. She is a member of the American Society of Marine
Artists and the Society of Animal Artists.
